10.18.04 - Four Hammond Wrestlers Place in VA Beach
Four Hammond Wrestlers attended a tough Virginia Tournament at First Colonial High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Ethan Cohen (130) and Bryce Harley (118) both placed 2nd in their weight class losing close finals matches. AJ Smith (157) placed 3rd losing only once on the day to Virginia State Champion Bubba Jenkins 8-3. Eric Yee (125) went 2-2 and placed fifth in a tough weight class. Congratulations to all of the members of the Team Maryland Folkstyle team that competed this past weekend.10.11.04 - Hammond Wrestlers Perform Well in Jersey
Five Hammond wrestlers made the trip with Team Maryland Folkstyle to South Plainfield, New Jersey. They were, Bryce Harley, Ethan Cohen, Jay Miller, Adam Blake and Stephen Sessa. Bryce went 1-2 placing in the top 6. Adam Blake placed 4th at 171 while Ethan Cohen and Jay Miller both took third in their weight class. State Placewinner Stephen Sessa dominated a New Jersey district champion and region runner-up before falling in the finals to take second place. Good work to all the Hammond Wrestlers who attended, the next event will be in Virginia Beach next weekend, more details to come.09.30.04 - Tentative 2005 Schedule Posted

09.24.04 - Hammond Ranked Pre-Season #1, #5 Overall in State
While only graduating one starter from the 2004 team and picking up a County Champion and State Placewinner in Steve Sessa, the Bears have earned a #1 ranking in the pre-season for the Class 1a/2a division. The Bears have also earned an overall rank of #5 in the State, behind only one other public school in Walt Whitman of Montgomery County, defending 3a/4a West Region Champions. 09.17.04 - Taweel Ranked #20 in the Country among Underclassman
Wrestling USA Magazine has put out their annual pre-season rankings for freshman/sophomores, juniors & seniors. Hammond's 2004 State Champion Vince Taweel earned a ranking of 20th at 125 lbs. among this years 9th and 10th graders. Vince is one of only five Maryland wrestlers to make the underclassman list. 09.09.04 - ALUMNI UPDATE: Joe Killo
2001 Hammond Wrestling graduate Joe Killo reached the half way point of his tour of duty in the Pennsylvania National Guard. Killo was assigned to Iraq earlier this year and has traveled to many parts of the country. The Hammond Wrestling family wishes him luck and thanks him for defending the world's freedom. Captains Ethan Cohen & AJ Smith, as well as JV County Champion Bryce Harley & State Champ Vince Taweel, all competed for Team Maryland at the New Jersey Tournament of Champions Dual Tournament in Holmdel, New Jersey.Ethan Cohen (120) was undefeated for Team MD going 4-0. Vince Taweel (130) was 3-1 falling to a top ranked New Jersey District & Region Champ from Manahawkin. AJ Smith (160) earned a quick pin in his first match before suffering an injury in his second match. Bryce Harley (120) could have had the performance of the Tournament for Maryland Silver earning a 4-2 record in route to defeating two district champions from New Jersey and Virginia as well as a New York Catholic State Runner-up. HeadHunters and Team Maryland practice will not run this week, stay informed by checking this website and MarylandWrestling.org.

Hammond Sophomore Vince Taweel represented Team Maryland at the most prestigous High School tournament in the country, the Cadet National Freestyle & Greco Championships in Fargo, North Dakota. Vince went 1-2 in Greco at 130 lbs. and 2-2 in Freestyle at 125 lbs. Vince represented well for both Maryland and Hammond.

Eight Hammond wrestlers competed in the MAWA Eastern National Qualifier wrestled at River Hill High School this Sunday. Vince Taweel (130) and Ryan McKevitt (140) both won their respective weight classes. Eric Yee (125) placed 2nd in the Advanced division falling to DeMatha's Steve Sargeant after recording wins over Bowie's Chris Willig and Arundel's 3rd place State Finisher, Justin Bowser. Ethan Cohen placed 3rd at 125 in the Elite division after falling to Virginia State Runner-Up Ronnie Mills of Hayfield in the Semi's. Other Hammond Wrestlers competing were Joe Burns (110), Matt Ketchum (110), Bryce Harley (115) and Brian Cridlin (140).03.25.04 - Washington Post All-County Team
Ethan Cohen & Vince Taweel were All-County first team members in the Washington Post published this Thursday the 25th. 03.12.04 - Cohen & Taweel All-County First Team
Ethan Cohen (103) & Vince Taweel (125) were both named to the Baltimore Sun All-Metro first team for this past season. The two were the only Howard County Wrestlers to be selected to the first team. River Hill's Taylor Green & Vince Cina were both named to the 2nd team while River Hill Coach Earl Lauer earned Coach of the Year honors for 2004. Ethan Cohen (103) and Vince Taweel (125) were both All-Howard County first team selections by the Baltimore Sun. River Hill's Vince Cina was named Wrestler of the Year and River Hill's Earl Lauer was named Coach of the Year. Sean Vorsteg (119) and AJ Smith (135) were both named to the All-County 2nd team.
03.09.04 - Hammond: Winter Sports Ceremony
Ethan Cohen received the Male Winter Athlete of the Year award this evening at the Winter Sports Ceremony at Hammond HS. Vince Taweel was a finalist for the award. The following awards were given out:

03.08.04 - Taweel Wins States, Cohen 2nd
Hammond finished 8th as a team at this year's State Championships wrestled for the first time at University of Maryland's Cole Field House. This is Hammond's best State Tournament finish since 2001. Freshman Vince Taweel became Hammond's first underclassman State Champion by winning the 125 pound title with a 1-0 victory of Oakland Mill's Jeff Plasse. Junior Captain Ethan Cohen (103) reached the finals before falling to Northern Garrett's Casey Kamp. Also winning matches but not placing were Freshman Zach Halper (112), Junior Captain AJ Smith (135) as well as Andrew Coon (275).
03.06.04 - Hammond in 10th, Pushes 2 to Semi's
Ethan Cohen (103) and Vince Taweel (125) both advanced to tomorrow mornings semi-final round at this year's Maryland State Tournament. Hammond now sits in 10th place with 5 wrestlers still alive and 27.5 points. Zach Halper (112) is alive in wrestle-backs as are AJ Smith (135) and Andrew Coon (275), both of which earned full bonus in their first consolation matches of the tournament. Wrestling begins tomorrow morning at 9:30, weigh-ins at 8:00.
03.01.04 - State Qualifiers Per Year
Hammond qualified eight wrestlers for this year's State Tournament, one more than last season. This season also marked the first time that three freshman from Hammond have qualified for states in the same year. Freshman starters Zach Halper (112), Vince Taweel (125) and Ryan McKevitt (140) all qualified this season. Below is a brief list of the # of qualifiers from Hammond in recent history.

02.28.04 - Bears Crown 2 Champs, Send 8 to States
Hammond placed a close 4th at the 1a/2a South Regional Tournament, a half a point behind Atholton, and behind Oakland Mills and Champion Glenelg. Ethan Cohen (103) won his first Regional Championship with a pin of Atholton's Robbie Eloshway. Freshman Vince Taweel (125) beat Oakland Mill's Jeff Plasse for the second straight weekend, earning him Regional Champion honors. Junior Captain AJ Smith (135) took second, losing a close final bout to Oakland Mill's Antonio Josiah, 3-2. Freshman Zach Halper (112) made the finals for the first time this season and took 2nd to Atholton's Jeff Zillmer. Sean Vorsteg (119) & Jeff Nuss (145) placed 3rd. Ryan McKevitt (140) & Andrew Coon (275) placed 4th, all will move on to the State Tournament next weekend at the University of Maryland. Antonio Alonso (130) earned an alternate spot with a 5th place finish, one win shy of qualifying for states.
02.27.04 - Hammond leads Region, Advances 8 to Semi-finals
The Bears advanced 8 out of 10 wrestlers to Saturday's Region semi-finals. Ethan Cohen (103), Sean Vorsteg (119), Vince Taweel (125), AJ Smith (135), Jeff Nuss (145) and Andrew Coon (275) all earned pins to advance to the semi-finals. Zach Halper (112) earned a major decision and Ryan McKevitt upset the #2 seed to reach the semi-finals at 140 lbs. Hammond is now in first place with 53 points behind second place Glenelg who has 48. Atholton and Oakland Mills were tied for third with 36. Wrestling begins tomorrow at 11:00am, weigh-ins at 9:00am.
02.26.04 - Region Tournament - Begins at 5pm
The 1a/2a South Region Wrestling Tournament will begin at 5:00 Friday at Glenelg High School. Wrestling will begin with preliminary pig-tail matches (single elimination) and then Championship Quarter-Finals.

02.24.04 - Hammond Qualifies 10 for Regions
The Hammond Golden Bears qualified ten wrestlers for this weekend's Regional Tournament. The Bears got two top seeds in Captains Ethan Cohen (103) and AJ Smith (135). Other qualifiers were Zach Halper (112), Sean Vorsteg (119), Vince Taweel (125), Antonio Alonso (130), Ryan McKevitt (140), Jeff Nuss (145), Jay Miller (160) and Andrew Coon (275). Wrestling begins Friday at Glenelg HS, times will be posted shortly.
12.09.03 - Hammond drops first match of the Season
Atholton defeated the Bears 45-24 in the first match of the season. Junior's Ethan Cohen (112) and Jeff Nuss (145) as well as Freshman Vince Taweel (125) all earned pins in their season debut. Freshman Ryan McKevitt had a strong performance at 135, earning a major. Junior AJ Smith also earned a victory at 140 lbs.

6.22.03 - Sessa Ranked 26th in the Nation
Last months issue of Wrestling USA magazine published the Final Rankings for Freshman & Sophomores for the United States. Hammond 189 pounder Stephen Sessa was ranked 26th amoung 9th & 10th graders in the country. Sessa is the first wrestler to be ranked in the country since Vaymond Dennis in 1999. 6.22.03 - Five Place at Patriot Open Folkstyle
Devon Gillett (103) won the Middle School Division and Vince Taweel (125) won the High School Division at the 2nd Annual Old Mill Patriot Open. Ethan Cohen (112) and Jimmy Parsells (119) both placed 2nd in the High School division. AJ Smith (140) took 3rd in the High School division. Other Hammond competitors including Eric Yee (119) and Adam Blake (152). Next up, Hammond travels to Strobel's Wrestling Camp at Lehigh University. Meeting times to be posted. Also, Captains Ethan Cohen and AJ Smith will be competing for Team Maryland at the Junior Nationals in Fargo, ND.

5.19.03 - Cohen & Smith earn Fargo Scholarships
The MSWA held it's Maryland State High School Freestyle & Greco-Roman championships this sunday at the McDonogh School in Owings Mills. The top 3 placewinners in the freestyle division would earn scholarship money towards attending the Cadet/Junior National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota. Ethan Cohen (112) placed 2nd in Freestyle earning $300 in scholarship money. AJ Smith (140) placed 3rd in freestyle earning $200 in scholarship money. 8th grader Devon Gillett (100) placed 2nd in Cadet Greco-Roman as did AJ Smith in Junior Greco. Ethan Cohen also placed 2nd in Cadet Greco. Adam Blake (145) and Eric Yee (119) both competed for Hammond in both styles.

4.27.03 - Greco-Roman Season Kicks Off
Four Hammond Wrestlers traveled to Frederick High School for the MSWA Freestyle & Greco State Championships. All four placed as Ethan Cohen was a double champion in both Freestyle & Greco in the Cadet division. Cohen also placed first in Greco in the High School division. Middle Schooler Vince Taweel took it to the 9th & 10th graders placing 1st in Freestyle at the Cadet Division. Devon Gillett placed in both Kids & Cadet Divisions in both styles. AJ Smith took 3rd in the Cadet Freestyle division, losing a close 4-2 match to Mt. St. Joe Junior League State Champion Alex Ward.
4.26.03 - Hammond Results at Falcon Open
Hammond brought 5 guys to the 6th Annual Severna Park Falcon Open. All five placed in the folkstyle event. Incoming eighth grader Vince Taweel lead the way taking 1st in the Junior Division and 2nd in the Senior Division. Eric Yee placed 2nd in both the Junior Division and the Senior Division, losing only to Taweel in the Junior Division. Incoming 8th grader Devon Gillett also placed 2nd in the junior division. Freshman Jimmy Parsells and Jose Maldonado both placed 3rd. Taweel earned the fastest pin award for the Junior Division with a 7 second pin in the last round, beating his already number 1 mark of 11 seconds. Visit Head Hunters.

4.13.03 - Hammond 2004 Gains All-Americans
The Head Hunters wrestling club was spread out throughout the east coast this weekend. Six Hammond wrestlers traveled to the MSWA Open Freestyle State Championships at Severna Park. They were, Sophomores' Ethan Cohen,Brian Cridlin, and Jared Greene, as well as Freshman Eric Yee and Bryce Harley; along with incoming 8th grader Devon Gillett. Ethan Cohen placed 2nd in the Cadet division and 2nd in the Junior Division behind #1 ranked state champion Andrew Gold. Devon Gillett placed 2nd in the Kids division while also wrestling in the Cadet division. Eric Yee placed 3rd in Cadet. A little bit more south of Severna Park, incoming 8th graders Ryan Conroy and Vince Taweel traveled to the Virginia Challenge Open Middle School Nationals in Norfolk, Virginia. Both earned Middle School All-American honors as Vince Taweel (119) placed 2nd and Ryan Conory (112) placed 4th. Congratulations to both for becoming Middle School All-Americans; both wrestled for the Vipers this season and won Junior League State Titles.
4.6.03 - Cohen and Gillett take first at NH
Sophomore Captain Ethan Cohen (112) won the North Hagerstown Open Wrestling Tournament yesterday by defeating East Region Champ Matt Frey of North Caroline. Incoming 8th grader Devon Gillett also took home first place honors at 105 lbs. Freshman Jimmy Parsells also attended and wrestled a good tournament at Junior 112.
3.31.03 - HGBW 2003 Wraps Up With Banquet
The 2003 Hammond Wrestling season came to a close last evening with its annual awards banquet. 22 wrestlers were honored as scholar athletes out of 29 roster positions. Scholar athletes were defined as recieving above a 3.14 GPA for the second grading semester. Among those were 3 National Honor Society members and 3 principal's honor roll recipients. 3.29.03 - Hammond 2004 Strikes a Solid Start
Sophomores Ethan Cohen, Brian Cridlin and AJ Smith as well as Junior David Rogawski traveled to the NHSCA Qualifier at Damascus High School. Ethan Cohen (112) placed 1st and AJ Smith (140) placed 2nd. Junior Rogawski (130) earned one victory in a weight class which featured Doug West, Dominic Ventura, Antonio Josiah and Corey Lawson. Incoming eighth graders Vince Taweel and Devon Gillett faired well. Taweel (125) earned first place honors and Gillett (100) earned 2nd in the Middle School Division. Cohen, Smith, Taweel and Gillett all qualified for the NHSCA Open Nationals in Norfolk, Virginia this summer. Reminder: The Hammond Wrestling Awards Banquet will be held at 5:30 on Sunday March 30th at Hammond High School.
3.17.03 - Stephen Sessa Named to All-State Fresh/Soph Team
Hammond's Stephen Sessa was named to Maryland's All State Freshman and Sophomore team for this season at 189 lbs. Stephen was the highest ranking underclassman in the state of Maryland at 189 this season. Congratulations to Steve and good luck next season.
3.8.03 - Cohen, Sessa & Merson place, Hammond finishes 18th
Stephen Sessa was Hammond's highest placer at this years state tournament. The sophomore placed 3rd in the 189 lbs. weight class. Another sophomore, Ethan Cohen (103), placed 4th at the tournament. 215 lbs. Senior Austin Merson placed 6th at Maryland's first 215 lbs state tournament. Hammond finished 18th as a team but returns two state placewinners and 2 other qualifiers next season.
3.2.03 - Hammond Qualifies 7 for States, Merson wins Regions
Hammond placed 2 wrestlers in Saturday's South Region Finals, but only won came away with the win. Austin Merson (215) won his first Regional Title and earned a #1 seed in next weekends state tournament. Ethan Cohen (103) placed 2nd. Sean Vorsteg (112), Dan Snyder (140), and Stephen Sessa (189) placed 3rd. Sophomore AJ Smith (130) and Senior Pat Wallace (171) placed 4th. The future looks bright as 3 of the 7 state qualifiers were sophomores including Cohen, Smith and Sessa. Vorsteg is a Junior. Hammond placed 2nd as a team behind Regional Dual Champ Centennial. Sean Smith (119) and Chris Giroux (152) also qualified for Regions but didn't place. Giroux forfeited both his matches due to illness. Senior Elliott Cohen (135) failed to qualify for the Regional Tournament despite twice beating the 6th seed Bianco from Glenelg, who had also previously beat the eighth seed McDermott from Howard. State match-ups will be posted as soon as they come in.
2.22.03 - Hammond Nipped by Centennial for second, Sessa Takes Home Title
Hammond placed 3rd at the 34th Annual Howard County Wrestling Championships on Saturday. River Hill won the event with Centennial 2nd, 6.5 points ahead of Hammond who earned 198 points. Hammond placed six wrestlers in Saturday night's finals, but only one took home the title. Steve Sessa (189) won 7-6 over Howard's Phil Thomas in a rematch of last years county final won by Thomas. Ethan Cohen (103), Sean Vorsteg (112), Sean Smith (119), Pat Wallace (171) and Austin Merson (215) all placed 2nd in the county. A.J. Smith (130) rallied to avenge a dual meet loss to Wilde Lake's Cisco Medina, 10-3 to take third place. Elliott Cohen (135) took third in his first varsity tournament of the year. Dan Snyder (140), Chris Giroux (152) and Marty Harvard (275) took home 4th place. David Rogawaksi (125) won the JV County Championship with wins over two very excellent wrestlers including River Hill's former varsity 125 pounder, Steve Brown. Nick George (112) and Jose Maldonado (119) both took 2nd in the JV Tournament. Bryce Harley (112) and Brian Cridlin (119) took home third place honors in a tournament which featured single elimination until the semi-finals. Next up is the Regional Tournament at Glenelg High School on the 28th. Regional Seeding information will be posted as it becomes available.
2.21.03 - County Tournament Seeds
The JV Tournament will go on tomorrow at Wilde Lake High School. The varsity county seeds are available here. Hammond earned one number 1 seed, Stephen Sessa at 189 lbs.
2.20.03 - COUNTY TOURNAMENT UPDATE #3
As of 9:00PM on Thursday, the decision on whether the JV County Tournament will be wrestled has yet to be decided. The decision is set to be made by 9:00 AM Friday morning. Weigh-ins will begin on Saturday at 7:30 AM and wrestling will begin at 9:00. Wrestlers will recieve a 2 pound weight allowance for the tournament in addition to the 2 pound January growth allowance. IE (107, 116, 123, etc) More information will be posted here and on the Message Board as it is learned. All Hammond wrestlers are to report to practice at 9:00AM Friday. All JV and Varsity must attend this practice.
2.20.03 - County Tournament Update
As of 2/20/03, the Junior Varsity County Tournament is still cancelled. Weigh-ins will begin at 7:00AM on Saturday at Wilde Lake High School. Wrestling will begin at 9:00AM. There will be a 2 lbs. weight allowance for the county tournament, no more than 2 pounds is allowed. This 2 pounds is in addition to the January 2 pound growth allowance. For example, the weights will be... 107, 116, 123, etc... Hammond will practice at 12:00 noon this Friday. All wrestlers including JV are expected to attend.
2.19.03 - Counties to be Wrestled Saturday, JV Cancelled
As reported by River Hill head wrestling coach Earl Lauer, the following changes have been made to the upcoming Howard County Wrestling Championships:
(1) The entire county tournament will be wrestled on Saturday, February 22nd.
(2) The JV portion of the tournament has been cancelled.
(3) Weigh-ins on Saturday will take place at 7:30AM with wrestling to begin at 9:00AM.
(4) Coaches seeding meeting will take place on Thursday at 6:00PM at Wilde Lake High School.

1.23.03 - Hammond Places Three, Sessa upsets LaPlanche at the Hammond Invitational
Hammond placed 13th at the 8th Annual Hammond Invitational; the #1 ranked toughest tournament in the state by the MSWA. This years field was arguably the toughest ever, with 19 schools, including 5 out of state teams. Steve Sessa (189) was Hammond's top placer, upseting Chesapeake's #2 ranked Chad Laplanche in the Quarter-finals, 11-3. Sessa then fell to #1 ranked Gary Stewart of DeMatha in the Semi-Finals, but then would wrestle back for 3rd place. Hammond's other placers included Ethan Cohen (103) and Austin Merson (215), who both placed 6th. Hammond will travel to Oakland Mills on Saturday for an league dual meet with the Scorpions. The Bears have not lost to the Scorpions since 1995 and lead the series 10-8.
12.27.02 - Hammond Wins FSK for 2nd Year in a Row
Hammond crowned 5 in a victory over state-ranked host Francis Scott Key who placed 2nd. North Hagerstown placed 3rd. Winners for Hammond were Ethan Cohen (103), Sean Smith (119), Dan Snyder (140), Chris Giroux (152), and Steve Sessa (189). Snyder and Sessa each earned pins, while Giroux earned a technical fall in their final bouts. Runners-up for Hammond were AJ Smith (130), Pat Wallace (160), and Caleb Lowe (135) who lost to eventual Outstanding Wrestler Award winner Josh Kelleman of FSK. Other placers were Todd Loisel (125) who placed third. Sean Vorsteg (112), Chase Nelson (145) and Austin Merson (215) placed fourth. Next up for Hammond is #1 ranked Mt. St. Joe which will be held at Hammond on January 4th, 2003.
12.26.02 - Directions to FSK
Hammond heads to the Francis Scott Key Christmas Tournament tomorrow. The bus leaves at 7:00 from Hammond High School. Wrestling begins at 11:00.
- Take 29 North to route I-70 East towards Baltimore.
- Take I-70 East to 695 N towards Towson.
- From 695 N, take 795 towards Owings Mills/Reisterstown
- From 795, merge onto 140 W, via exit 9b towards Westminster (look for signs for 140 West)
- Travel approx. 14 miles on 140, turn left onto Royer Road
- From Royer Road, Turn Right onto Uniontown Road
- From Uniontown, stay straight onto Middleburg Road
- After a half of a mile, turn a slight left on Bark Hill Road. School is on Road, less than 1/4 mile.
12.08.02 - Hammond Takes Third at River Hill Duals
Hammond defeated Wilde Lake, Arundel and North Hagerstown to take Third at the first ever River Hill Duals. Hammond fell to eventual champion Colonial Forge of Virginia to take 2nd in their pool and defeated North Hagerstown 53-21 to take third. Dan Snyder (140) went 4-0 on the day. Sean Smith (119), Caleb Lowe (135), Corey Wright (171) and Steve Sessa (189) all went 3-1. Hammond's JV will take on the brand new Reservoir High School this Tuesday.

11.12.02 - Hammond Firewood Sale - Nov. 16th
The Hammond Wrestling team will be conducting a firewood sale on Saturday November, 16th. Proceeds will go to help the wrestling team in its journey towards a state title. The wood will be offered at tremendously reduced prices so be sure to come out to Hammond High School to get some cheap firewood and support a good cause. Wood may also be sold on Sunday if there is a surplus from Saturday sales.

3.16.02 - 4 Hammond Wrestlers Qualify for Open Nationals
Several Hammond Wrestlers participated in the NHSCA Open National Qualifier at Damascus High School. Manuel Patino (215) took home 1st place to qualify for the Open National Championships in Norfolk, Virginia. The top four finishers in each weight qualify. Sophomore Chris Gerioux placed 2nd at 160. Ethan Cohen (103) placed 3rd, while Pat Wallace (189) placed 4th. David Ragauski (119), Sean Smith (119), Corey Wright (171), Collin Wright (189), and Darryl Augustiniak (189) also particapted to give Hammond a strong presence at the tournament.

2.19.01 - Hammond qualifies 8 for Regional Tournament
Hammond qualified 8 wrestlers for the 1a/2a South Regional Wrestling Tournament to be held at Hammond this weekend. 2x County Champ Ryan Mackin (135) qualified for his 4th straight Regional Tournament, earning a top seed. While County Champs Jimmy Davis (125) and Joe Killo (145) qualified for their 2nd Tournament, as did 4th place state finisher Scott Wallace (171). Juniors Russell Tebeleff (119) and Jarrell Graham (140) , as well as seniors Marshall Porter (152) and Brett Gailey (160) also qualified, this being their first Regional Tournament appearance. 7 out of 8 of these wrestlers appeared in last weekend's Howard County Finals. 2.17.01 - Hammond places 2nd in County, Mackin wins Glenn L. Devane
Hammond placed second at this year's Howard County Tournament, scoring 190.5 points, to River Hill's 195. Hammond crowned two-champs in 125 lbs. senior Jimmy Davis, and 135 lbs. senior Ryan Mackin. Russell Tebeleff, Jarrell Graham, Joe Killo, Marshall Porter, and Scott Wallace all placed 2nd. 160 lbs. senior Brett Gailey placed 4th, while 103 lbs. Sean Smith placed 5th and 130 lbs. Mike Azoulay placed 6th. Sophomore Caleb Lowe also placed 6th at 112 lbs. Ryan Mackin won the Glenn L. Hammond defeated Atholton 29-28 at Mt. Hebron in the 1a/2a South Regional Dual Meet Finals. They defeated Atholton for the second straight time in less than a week. Hammond now travels to Kent Island High School on Saturday to compete for a State Title. Other schools in attendence will be Northern Garrett, Owings Mills, and Kent County. Hammond placed second with 180 points behind Old Mill who earned 202.5. 125 pound senior Jimmy Davis and 140 pound senior Ryan Mackin both took home 1st place honors. Hammond has dropped to an HM pick in the Sun Rankings as Mt. Hebron moves into the #15 spot with River Hill at #6 and Atholton #7. Individual rankings show Ryan Mackin ranked #3 and Scott Wallace ranked #4.

After the first day of competition at the Western Branch Rotational, Hammond has a record of 1-3-1 and currently stands in 7th place going into the second day. The Baltimore Sun Pre-Season wrestling rankings show Hammond ranked 11th with fellow Howard County squads River Hill and Atholton ranked 7th and 8th respectively. Hammond faces Mt. Hebron and Laurel tomorrow to kick off the season and will face #5 Old Mill when they return from Virginia's prestigious Western Branch Rotational next Tuesday.

12.18.99 - HAMMOND INVITATIONAL UPDATE: 75 State Ranked Wrestlers, Top 32 in the Nation
The Hammond Invitational has been listed in the Top 32 by USA Wrestling for the Toughest High School Tournaments in the Nation. The 2000 Tournament Notables have been updated. The field now includes 75 state ranked wrestlers, 35 nationally ranked wrestlers, and 14 state champions. Also, 2 new teams have been added to the field: Maryland East Regional Champ Kent County and Northern, 5th in Baltimore City. View the list of competing teams here.

The last scrimmage before the regular season begins against Lackey has been moved to Friday, December 3rd. It was previously scheduled on the 2nd. Along with Lackey, South River High School will also attend the scrimmage. The updated schedule reflects these changes. This season, Hammond will be attending the Western Branch Rotational Round-Up on December 10th & 11th. This is a dual style tournament in which Hammond will wrestle 9 dual meets over the course of the weekend. Last year, the field consisted of top ranked teams such as Great Bridge, VA; DeMatha Catholic, MD; Cox, VA; Hickory, VA; Kempsville, VA; Lake Taylor, VA; Hickory, VA; and many more state & nationally ranked teams. There will be a mandatory meeting for all Parents/Guardians of Hammond wrestlers on Wednesday November 10th in Coach Di Rienzo's classroom. (On the corner of the science department) Important info about the upcoming season will be addressed and it is important for all Hammond Wrestling Parents to attend, especially parents of freshman and wrestlers new to the program. Several Hammond Wrestlers competed in the Delaware Fall Open held at William Penn High School in New Castle, DE on Sunday. This tournament had a lot of tough competition and previewed many of the wrestlers that will be attending the Hammond Invitational in January. Ethan Cohen (120) was undefeated for Team MD going 4-0. Vince Taweel (130) was 3-1 falling to a top ranked New Jersey District & Region Champ from Manahawkin. AJ Smith (160) earned a quick pin in his first match before suffering an injury in his second match. Bryce Harley (120) could have had the performance of the Tournament for Maryland Silver earning a 4-2 record in route to defeating two district champions from New Jersey and Virginia as well as a New York Catholic State Runner-up.
