Matches normally begin the first week in December. Does the team make cuts? At Hammond we do not make cuts for the Wrestling team. Anybody who wishes to come out and wrestle for Hammond will be on the team, provided they regularly attend practice and abide by all rules set forth by the coaches. I've never wrestled before, will I be lost? 90% of wrestlers on Hammond's team have never wrestled before high school. The first half of the season is dedicated to introducing the new wrestlers into the sport and providing a knowledge base which will help them learn better and faster. Nearly all of Hammond's State Champion wrestlers had no previous wrestling experience before they came to Hammond. I heard you have to cut weight in wrestling. Hammond High School and the Hammond coaching staff is strongly against any rapid weight loss methods. Wrestlers wrestle at their natural weight and are certified by a trainer as to the lowest weight they are allowed to wrestle. The coaching staff does promote a well regimented healthy diet that will help increase your performance and conditioning throughout the season. How is the lineup determined? Varsity & JV? Wrestle-off's will determine the starter at at the Varsity and JV levels. The best person in a each weight class will wrestle varsity, the next will wrestle JV. The remaining wrestlers at a weight class will fill exhibition spots and will gain as many exhibition matches as possible during dual meets. All Exhibition & JV wrestlers will wrestle in JV tournaments and in the JV County Tournament in February. Varsity positions will be locked in during the second half of the season due to Regional point accumulation. What is HeadHunters Wrestling Club? HeadHunters is a wrestling club run out of Hammond that wrestles every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30pm during the off-season. All new and current wrestlers are encouraged to attend this club, for more info click here. EQUIPMENTWRESTLING SHOES and HEADGEAR are required at the high school level. Headgear can be provided by the school but we recommend purchasing your own for comfort and convenience.Wrestling Shoes and Headgear can be purchased at your local sports store or at online vendors.
